The water in a tankless heater passes through a series of tightly wound tubes, and those receive a lot of heat from the burner. Without proper maintenance, scale can build up in those heated tubes and cause a blockage. The scale doesn't build up over night, but years of neglected maintenance could leave you a costly repair. It could even void the warranty.
